Immigration Red Herrings

Immigration Red Herrings

The issue of illegal immigration keeps popping up and is used by many to garner political support with claims that the US is being overrun by illegal immigrants and that the problem is getting worse.

In fact, while it is true that there are quite a large number of undocumented aliens in this country, most of them are hard-working, law-abiding, taxpaying individuals and families who contribute positively to our society. Clearly, some do not and must be dealt with but these are a minority group and not representative of the larger group.

The other scare-mongering allegation is that the problem is, allegedly, getting worse. This allegation too turns out to be false. According to fact checkers at Politifact, multiple estimates show that the illegal immigrant population has stabilized, or even decreased, from its peak in 2007 through 2014, the latest available data.

According to Pew, the illegal immigrant population was 11.3 million in 2014, down from 11.4 million five years prior in 2010. This is in sharp contrast to dramatic and steady increases throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

These statistics are widely available and one wonders why some continue misrepresenting the true situation.
