Our Wonderful, Fragile, Democracy.

Our Wonderful, Fragile, Democracy.

It seems that politicians are deemed to be the scourge of the earth whenever people don’t agree with the woman, man, or party in charge. The same people who today are clamoring for the heads of all politicians and for having them substituted by a “regular’ person, whatever that is, your barber, doctor, mechanic, accountant, you name it, except, of course for a lawyer, were perfectly content ten years ago under President Bush. And, as president, Bush deserved our support, if not everyone’s agreement, as does any president in power. Besides, our country and the world are too complex to be placed in the hands of any outsider, however honest and smart they may be.

Demanding our politicians heads is not the way our democracy is supposed to work. Certainly we can speak our minds, that is what freedom of speech is all about, but we also need to respect and protect our constitutional form of government. we need to support the system itself even if we throw the bum out the next time we vote, which is the beauty of our system.

True democracy, what we have here in America, is a unique and fragile thing. Without the support of the people, the Constitution is just a piece of paper, as it is in many countries around the world. Some talk about main street coming back and taking over. What, they never voted and are suddenly going to do so? Every person in government was elected by us. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t and we need to accept that until the next time.

We need to take the long view, rather than trying to tear the system down because we are not happy with present conditions. Our system works if we let it and, besides, does anybody really know of a better alternative? Perhaps we should get a Queen or King, or how about a Military Junta? How about a theocracy?
